Supportive Living Accommodation Standards
The Supportive Living Accommodation Standards assist the province in monitoring compliance for accommodations and accommodation services in supportive living accommodations.
The standards support a safe and comfortable environment that increases the quality of life for Albertans residing in supportive living accommodations. The standards are mandatory for all supportive living facilities where four or more people live together. A separate but similar set of
accommodation standards apply to all long-term care facilities in the province.
Updated Supportive Living Accommodation Standards were released in April 2010 under the new Supportive Living Accommodation Licensing Act. All supportive living accommodations will be required to comply with the updated accommodation standards.
If you have concerns about accommodations standards for supported living facilities, please call 1-888-357-9339 or view the Safeguards for Vulnerable Adults fact sheet for more information.
Other Standards and Legislation
Other standards that may also apply to supportive living facilities include:
- Continuing Care Health Service Standards: These standards only apply to publicly funded health care and personal support services provided by or funded through a contract with Alberta Health Services. The Ministry of Health and Wellness is responsible for the enforcement of the standards. Supportive living facilities must also comply with additional municipal, provincial and federal legislation. Supportive living operators must comply with all applicable legislation and regulations.
- Creating Excellence Together accreditation for the provision of services for adults with developmental disabilities. As a condition of funding, service providers who provide residential, employment and/or community access supports for adults with developmental disabilities, served by the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program in Alberta, must obtain and maintain accreditation from a body approved by the Minister of Seniors. In order to receive funding from PDD, service providers must also undergo an accreditation review once every three years by the
