On October 30, 2009 the Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act came into force, replacing the Dependents Adult Act. This legislation better addresses the current needs of Albertans by providing more supportive decision making options and safeguards to protect vulnerable adults who are no longer able to make all of their own decisions.

The Protection for Persons in Care Act promotes the safety and well-being of adult Albertans who receive services from publicly funded agencies. These agencies must protect Albertans from abuse and maintain a reasonable level of safety. The Protection for Persons in Care program is part of Alberta Seniors and Community Supports.
